BBC Local Radio Mk3 desk complete radio studio needs good home
This is a BBC Local Radio Mk3 radio studio desk, originally installed in Brighton in 1978 and still in good working order. It dates from the days when the BBC felt there weren’t suitable commercial desks for live operation so they made their own. The construction philosophy is much the same as in the very earliest days of BBC radio – the desk is a set of panels with switches and pots in and the electronics are in the remote bay (a full-height 19 rack) with the jackfield. This particular desk was originally built with BBC germanium amplifiers – they were replaced with commercial modules in a 1990s rebuild, and we took it back to BBC metric amplifiers with silicon transistors. It is a wonderful thing to sit at, and a delight to use for live radio. They don’t make anything like this any more.. The desk was in use by an independent production company making programmes for Radio 4 until five years ago, and has been used in our production studio since then. Now it is surplus to requirements and I want to find a good home for it. The ideal place would be a working museum on a big site where it would be an exhibit and could be used for running a special event radio station when there are big open days. It has been removed from the studio without cutting the cables so would be relatively simple to put back together. To be absolutely clear, this listing is for the 17 channel stereo desk with four outside source channels with individual clean feeds, talkback, microphone and line send amps, mixer amplifiers, and equipment bay, power supplies and a full set of drawings. I also have available the related compressors and voice-over units; Rogers LS3/5a loudspeakers and HH AM8/12 amplifiers; two Technics SP10 grams with power supplies, BBC tone arms, Ortofon cartridges and Surrey Electronics preamps; Beyer 201 microphones with anglepoise-type arms; a Sonifex triple-stack cart machine and record module; a FAVAG pulse clock in BBC woodwork with signal lights and a DCF pulse generator to drive it, etc, etc.. There are also some spare desk panels and microphone, line and headphone amplifier modules. These are not in this listing. The purpose of this listing is to see if a museum can be found for it, but if not offers will be invited. This item is for collection only from near Hailsham, East Sussex. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch – we now have a couple of possible leads and will be looking to place this thing somewhere people can see and if possible use it. It looks as though the desk will be going to the Radio Museum in Somerset – do go and visit later in the year if you would like to see it close-up. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch about it. The item “BBC Local Radio Mk3 desk complete radio studio needs good home” is in sale since Friday, April 9, 2021.
