The CZ-5000 is one of the finest examples of that line and this is a particularly clean example that I hope can go to a good home. If you are unfamiliar with phase distortion then in short it is like a variant of the phase modulation or’frequency modulation’ (FM) synthesis found on e. The Yamaha DX7, but much easier to program and therefore with a much wider gamut of analogue and digital sounds right out of the box. I came into possession of this synth a short while ago and it was already in basically excellent condition considering it is about 37 years old. It has had an external clean, including every button, fader, and key. The synth itself has not been opened since being in my possession. When this came to me it had a loud and crackly chorus fader which I fixed using some specialist contact cleaner for musical instruments. The master volume and chorus faders are now as clean as can be. Also, the faders are all original, unlike other listings I’ve seen around for similar instruments. Absolutely no sticky keys. Keybed is responsive and expressive. No velocity but this is typical for the era and even the famous Juno and Jupiter synths did not have velocity sensitivity as it wasn’t really standard yet. Incredibly there is a fantastic 8-track sequencer built-in to the CZ-5000, unlike other CZ synths, which allows for flexible composition and arrangement entirely on the hardware. The onboard stereo chorus is great and while not quite as’rich’ sounding as the Juno chorus gives a similar stereo widening effect to your sound. As you can see there are some light bumps and scratches here and there but there are remarkably few considering the age of this instrument. Full MIDI implementation if you want to use it as a controller or send control messages from a DAW. Using software such as VirtualCZ you can design your own presets in a convenient software editor and also download presets made by other CZ users from around the world. The factory presets are left as-is. The user presets are currently set to some of the Don Solaris CZ presets included in the VirtualCZ software but if you dislike them for any reason it is easy to perform a factory reset or simply overwrite them yourself. Personally, I think the Don Solaris presets are absolutely superb and represent some of the best examples of programming for this instrument around – his background as a sound designer for Roland Corporation speaks for itself. I think that in general the way that presets are handled on the CZ-5000 is superior to other models from this era as there is a clear divide between factory and user presets. That particular’warm pad’ sound is part of his album as Satoshi & Makoto titled’CZ? 5000 Sounds & Sequences Vol. II’ available on Bandcamp. I would highly recommend both volumes I and II of their CZ-5000 albums as a guide to the expressiveness and uniqueness of these instruments.
