This is an opportunity to own a hard to come by and highly sought after pair of Dukane 5A540 16 ohm compression drivers with a Dukane 183-330 (209-15) Y throat adapter. They have great ohm readings and look nice as well, showing minimal signs of use. The push button wire connects work to hold the wires in place. The silver rings do not show a lot of corrosion like a lot of examples do. Please read below for the history and importance of these legendary drivers. The packaging for the drivers will be tremendous to ensure safe transit. You get one pair mounted to a throat for the price shown. These have lower serial numbers in the 5000s and 6000s. They have great original cork gaskets too. The Y adapter is in great condition and is made to mount two standard 1″ throat, 3 bolt compression drivers to a four bolt standard 2″ horn throat. It is similar in concept to the Altec 30172 or 30170 and is very rare. The diaphragms are genuine. There are up to throats with a pair of drivers on each available. The specs for these drivers are. Dukane 5A540 Vintage Hi-Fi Compression Drivers. Frequency response: 500Hz-18,000Hz. Rated Input: 50 watts RMS. Maximum Input (music): 150 Watts. Magnetic Flux Density: 19,000 Gauss. Sound Pressure (with appropriate horn): 105dB. Dimensions: 5 3/4 D x 4 1/2 dia. Weight: 9 lbs each unpacked. The Dukane 5A540 Compression Driver was produced from the 60s-70s. They were originally manufactured by JBL for Dukane. The drivers were rebranded 175 (pro version 2410). The 5A540 is essentially a 16 Ohm version of the Coral M-100. Very little bad can be said against any of the above mentioned drivers, though a strong case can be made that the Dukane 5A540 is the best sounding. It is essentially a 175 style driver, similar throat and diaphragm, with a significantly larger Alnico NKS-5DG magnet. It also specs out better, and its build quality is every bit as good as the JBL 175. Sonically the Dukane 5A540 is an outstanding compression driver that can be used in 2 or 3-way configurations with a number of compatible horns. It provides exacting reproducing of the most important part of the frequency range. Rather than designing and building their own sound drivers and horns, Dukane licensed production from recognized pro audio manufacurers. These 5A540 compression drivers, which are an excellent match for the Dukane/Vitavox 5A325 horns, are generally recognized as rebranded JBL’s but they are also rebranded Coral M100s after JBL quit making them for Dukane. The Dukane 5A540’s get excellent reviews. I’ve come across many favourable comparisons to the JBL 175/2410 drivers and the related Coral M-100. While most people have focused their attention on the JBL 2440/2441 these ones have gone relatively unnoticed. I’ve also previously owned a pair of JBL 2441’s. There’s a sweetness and brilliance about the 5A540’s that the 2441’s just can’t match on their own… If you’re looking for a 2-way system, the 5A540/175/2410 is an excellent choice for a mid-high driver. If you currently have SET amps, or are planning on getting them, the 5A540’s are a perfect match for the efficiency requirements of SETs. Physically the 5A540/175/2410 series of drivers have an additional advantage over the JBL 2440/2441. The throats in the 2440/2441’s are plastic and can crack pretty easily allowing the magnet to go out of alignment. Although the magnetic gap is protected from a misaligned magnet most people do not value a driver with a cracked throat. The 5A540/175/2410’s have aluminum throats which have the strength to resist magnet shifting and will become a much better investment over the years. I fully expect this range of drivers to continue to increase in value and eventually surpass the value of the 2440/2441’s. The Coral M-100 appears to have the flatter response over the JBL 2410. The flux density and weight are also greater. JBL claims a sensitivity of 117 dB over the Coral’s 105 dB but that’s into a plane wave tube, not a horn. Depending on the horn design you can expect about 18 dB greater output from a plane wave tube than a horn.. I do know they’ll take the same diapragm as the JBL 2410….
