In absolutely stunning condition, the microphone body looks like almost new with barely a mark on it at all. The head is in the same beautiful new looking condition, there are no dings or marks to the perforated shields on either side and the side anglepoise chassis is literally just like new, the only slight visible signs of use is on the adjustable section where it’s previous owners have adjusted the angle of it. I have removed the covers so I could inspect the ribbon and wiring and it all looks untouched by anyone, if it has had any issues they’ve done a good job as it appears that nothing has ever been changed. A basic functionality test was made into a Behringer DJ mixer that has a mic preamp and the Reslo performs like I was expecting, I must say that I have absolutely no idea what it should sound like so it may not be perfect but it works as a mic should as I could hear myself clearly in my headphones and the recording sounded clean and clear. There are a few options when putting a preamp together so I build them to order to give you the opportunity to pick the perfect combination of op-amps and transformers. Transformers Ed Anderson EA2623-1 : Replicate the transformers found in the vintage API consoles from the 70’s. Litz 2623-1-L :Referred to as the “preferred” sounding transformer. This transformer has a uniform high frequency response and the bottom end is more open. Gar1731 : Built by me, sonically very similar to the 2520 but with a slightly smoother bottom and top. Classic Audio Products Inc. Has put together one of the best sounding API like preamps out there. The VP28 is stuffed with a ton of features including. Stepped Input Stage (60dB of gain). Stepped Output Stage (12dB of gain). Two Op Amps (gar2520, gar1731, and other options). Two Line Transformers (Litz or Ed Anderson). Three Pole Hi Pass Filter (40Hz, 80Hz, and 160Hz). DB/Octave Toggle switch for Filter (-6dB or -12dB/octave). These preamps can accomplish the clean “LA Sound” as well as an overdriven sound reminiscent of British preamps. These pre’s have an amazing presence and give a full bodied sound to any mic. They are great on condensers as well as some lower output microphones such as the SM7B or a ribbon mic. The VP28 doesn’t just stop at being a stellar mic pre though, if you put it into Line Mode (de-select Mic) the VP28 will properly load the input for any line level device. This means you can now reamp some lack-luster tracks through the VP28 and give them some of the power and drive they may have been missing before. All units are 100% VPR Alliance compliant.
