If it didn’t sound better I wouldn’t say so! Hey I’m a real solid fan of the real Neumann U87. As a studio owner I struggled always to keep an 87 around with a couple other good mics, the price was very much a concern – how do I get world class sound without being held captive by a brand?? But what they are making now is the same in looks only. The pictures show the old Neumann capsule with diaphragms only 75% gold sputtered, deteriorating and needing cleaning and burnishing and new diaphragms due to poor gold alloy sputtered on the Mylar. Note the plastic tension rings and the extra backplate connection screws in the plastic tension rings. Makes tuning the capsule like tuning a drumhead with plastic tension rings with high torque screws also on that ring that had to hold the drum together. Imagine trying to get that right. The writing on the tension rings is torque notations! That’s why there are markings on the capsule denoting torque to flat on each screw. Flat being the tension surface of the diaphragms. The front diaphragm only is so dialed in. Additionally our capsule is larger at 35mm not 34mm. Larger, and more reflective. We use highly polished brass tension rings and no backplate screws that affect proper diaphragm tensioning. If you get the chance in this life to check diaphragm tensioning on 87’s your going to find each one is completely different from the next. Our capsule is edge the edge gold sputtered utilizing highly polished brass tension rings for better reflections and even tensioning and there are no backplate mounting screws holding the assembly together. We utilize one of the two best capsule makers in the world and the CNC processes employed are extremely precise. Out modification sounds way better. Grab this collectors item if you dare.
